On Friday September 20 2019 , hundreds of thousands of young people around the world took part in strikes to demand action on climate change. More than 4,500 strikes were planned worldwide in over 120 countries, and more than 500 strikes are registered in the U.S. alone.
The strike, which is organized by The Climate Strike Coalition, was intended to kick off a week of events to highlight climate change.
One of the flagship protests on Friday was in New York City, three days before the U.N. Climate Summit. Tens of thousands of people turned out for the strikes with estimating that as many as 300,000 attended. New York’s strike was held jointly with a Puerto Rico Day of Action; Friday marks the second anniversary of Hurricane Maria, which experts estimate killed at least 2,975 people on the island.
As the city where the Stonewall uprising took place, no one celebrates pride like New York City. But with June marking both the 50th anniversary of the uprising as well as the first World Pride hosted in the United States, Pride 2019 was extra special, welcoming millions of LGBTQIA+ guests near and far to commemorate a half-century of LGBTQIA+ history.
